Ackee and Roti
Ackee and Roti is an autobiographical retelling of the struggles of abandonment and acceptance faced in daily life. Narinder Purewal brings us through her life, relationships, parenthood, and spirituality. Struggling to fit in, this British-born Punjabi overcomes the barriers in her life that embody cultural divide, heartache, love, and trauma.
Succumbing under the pressures of society, she descends into the pits of regret and despair. Her only solace is her belief in God, her two children, and her idea of redemption. On her way back to a stable life, she finds that her journey is filled with hard times and even harder choices. And the end of it all, the only question that comes to her mind is, “Can I accept the society that doesn’t accept me?”

Meet Me
Narinder K. Purewal
I am a single mother of two children and a teacher who works with children and young people with an autism spectrum condition or an identified social, emotional or mental health need.
I have been a single mother for 12 years now. (since my daughter was 6 months old). Although I am a single mother their father plays an active role in their upbringing.
My children are biracial and come from diverse backgrounds. I am ‘Punjabi’ and from the Sikh faith and their father is a British-born Jamaican. We are both raised in the United Kingdom.
You can read all about my relationship with their father in my book ‘Ackee and Roti’. As a South Asian woman who didn’t follow the ‘typical route’ of having an arranged marriage, and how after 12 years together the relationship we had
came to a destructive end to how we rebuilt a new one so that we could raise our children with the love and care they rightly deserved.

It is a very personal book providing an insight to how tough life can be for a young lady. It is not eat easy to write about such issues. Most people would rather just try and forget than write.
